I’ve been a sports fan my whole life. As a woman in sports spaces, I’ve encountered plenty of assumptions. People ask if I really understand the game or if I’m just there for the social scene. These questions reflect outdated thinking about who belongs in sports.
Women Are Everywhere in Sports
Women are everywhere in sports: as coaches, players, commentators, statisticians, and fans. We care about strategy, stats, and competition just as much as anyone. When someone questions your knowledge or commitment based on gender, it’s frustrating. But I’ve learned there’s power in standing firm in what you love.
Standing Your Ground
I’ve been to hundreds of games. I know player stats, understand the rule book, and have opinions on coaching decisions. I can debate plays with the best of them. But I’ve also learned to be patient when someone assumes otherwise. Sometimes they’re genuinely curious, not dismissive.
Your Passion Is Valid
What I want other women to know: your passion is valid. You don’t need to prove anything to anyone. If you love sports, be loud about it. Wear your team’s colors with pride. Share your knowledge. Ask questions when you want to learn more. Sports are for everyone who cares about them.
The Sports World Is Changing
The sports world is changing. More women are attending games, playing at every level, and taking leadership roles in organizations. When we show up authentically, we change perceptions. Our presence matters. Our voices matter. Our fandom matters.
Building Community
To other female fans: let’s build community. Support each other at games. Call out disrespect when you see it. Celebrate the women and girls playing the sports we love. Be the welcoming face for new female fans. Together, we’re reshaping what sports fandom looks like.
Sports aren’t a boys’ club. They never were. If you love the game, you belong here.
